Breeding Evaluation of Lipizzaner Foals, Mares, and Stallions 2023

This year’s breeding evaluation and breeding exhibition took place on September 16, 2023, at the Equestrian Sports Center in Lopata near Celje. Breeder present 26 mares with foals, a breeding stallion, and 12 young mares.

We participaded with 6 horses for evaluation, including 5 mares with foals and one young mare to be approved as a broodmare. Among the female foals, we presented 2 fillies, and among the males, 3 colts.

1st place : Monteaura

2nd place Betalka

We are especially proud of this filly since she is the last offspring of mare Betalka, who turned 26 this year. She recived 37 points.

In the male competition, our colts performed exceptionally well, securing the top positions.

Following that, there was an evaluation of the conformation of young mares for inclusion in the studbook. The highest-rated mare was our 135 Barbana XVI, born on April 18, 2019. Her mother is 243 Barbana III, and her father is 388 C. Allegra XLVI. She has a special story.

In 2019, her mother sadly passed away one day after giving birth. We began to feed the filly with a bottle, but soon realized that it would be much better for her if we found a foster mother. After several unsuccessful attempts, we found an older mare named Capriola who accepted her but, unfortunately, didn’t produce milk. Despite this, Janez continued to feed the filly with a bottle, and Mama Capriola raised her as a diligent filly. This year, she start with basic training under saddle a few months before the evaluation and achieved an unexpected result. We are very proud of the mare, as she will be able to continue the Barbanas line in the future, and as owners, we are committed to preserving the breeding of Lipizzaners and promoting the work of Slovenian identity and living cultural heritage, which was also recognized in 2022 when it was added to UNESCO’s list.
